NORWOOD—Calling Hours for 89 year old Robert S. "Bob" Sleicher, a resident of 126 Austin Ridge Road, Norwood, will be held Thursday at the Buck Funeral Home in Norwood from 6-8 p.m. Burial will be held in the Cranberry Lake Cemetery in the springtime. Bob passed away Friday, February 10, 2017 at his home with his wife at his side. Robert is survived by his wife of 35 years, Jessica, Norwood; his three sons, Peter Roberts; Sanford, ME; Peter and Christina Sleicher, RI; Bret and Azure Dee Sleicher, CT; his three daughters, Kristin Sleicher, NM; Heather Sleicher, FL and Carrie and Jamie Cherlin, FL. Bob is also survived by his eleven grandchildren and two brothers, Charles Sleicher, WA and Harry and Ruth Sleicher, RI.
Born in Troy, NY as the youngest of three children to Charles and Beatrice Cole Sleicher, Bob graduated from High School and attended Moses Brown in Providence, RI where he was captain of the track team. He was the only athlete in the history of Moses Brown to attain a State Championship in Pole Vault. He later attended Brown University and also excelled in track. He was again the Captain of the track team and won the Heptagonal Championships in both Pole Vault ( vaulting to 13'4") and High Hurdles. Bob was also selected to compete in the Olympic tryouts, but a broken arm prevented him from competing. Robert entered the U.S. Army, and served during the Korean Conflict, earning 5 medals. Robert managed the Seaboard Foundation for 39 with his brother in New England, employing over 250 at its best. In 1986, Bob had a heart attack while hunting in Cranberry Lake and later choose to move to Potsdam to retire and pursue his painting career in the Adirondack Mountains.
Throughout his prestigious career in art, Robert has been awarded 54 awards including 2 gold medals in all 50 States and 13 foreign countries. His works reflected his love of the outdoors and wildlife. He has painted many of the covers for the award winning magazine NYS Conservationist, Yankee as well as other outdoor publications. Some of his achievements are the Scribner Prize, the Rhode Island Art Medal, the Conservative Painters Award and the Lincoln Prize. He has been a member of The Society of Animal Arts since 1967 as well as being a member of the Providence Watercolor Club, the Dumas Smithfield Sportsman Club and a honorary member of the Dewitt Fishing and Game Club. He had a passion for the outdoors, enjoyed hunting, fishing and canoeing, which provided vision for his artwork and family. Robert also enjoyed wood carving, being a Master Gunstock Carver, one of only 16 in the United States at one time. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing and watching sports.
