Smith Family : It was very sad to learn of the passing of Al and so soon after the loss of Peg . I have so many cherished memories of how wonderful and beneficial my time working at the store was during my formative years . I learned so many valuable lessons from Al over the years of my youth from how to be a good reliable worker , a good citizen and a better human being . Al taught me life lessons not only from what he said but by by what he did to quietly help others in so many ways . His always positive upbeat attitude was sincere . He had an amazing loving heart for his family , his employees and the Community of Norfolk . He will be missed but his memory will not fade away . May he rest in peace .

We’re so sorry for your loss. I have so many good memories of working for Al when I was young. Al is part of a generation that will be missed. Randy remembers always seeing Al first thing in the morning sweeping in front of the store. He took great pride in his work and in his family.
Sincerely,
Barb and Randy Agen

Looking at the obituary combining that with the memories I had growing up in the family circle what a remarkable life my uncle had and my Aunt Peg. He touched so many people in a positive way. he was a man that never met a stranger. I cannot remember him saying an ugly word to or about anyone. he showed Christ's love his whole life. As a young child we would come to visit and I got to work in the store, which I loved. One year he put me in charge of the candy section. Big mistake!! I think his profits suffered that visit as I felt I had to sample what I was handing out. he never got upset and just said, hey save some room for supper. When my dad died when I was 13 he stepped in and provided some parental guidance which was a simple as how you carry money in your pocket to how you treat people with respect. Today a lot of people speak words and what your should do and how you should act, yet don not follow it themselves. But if you look at my Uncle and followed his footsteps through out his life he walked what he talked. Christian values at work, He enjoyed his family, work and life in general. Even in the tougher times he always had a smile and a hug. There are so many small memories that make up the total package of who he was. I remember family meals we had that our bellies hurt yet he wanted to go for ice cream! We groaned as a group knowing we as mortal humans could not eat on more thing. all the while arguing that it would fill in the cracks! I will miss my aunt and uncle as they were part of that last heritage of grown-ups that we aspired to be like. As sad as it is that they won't be around for another hug (some that could displace vertebrae or that trip to the freezer to check on "Jack"). We will meet again. As a Christion I know they are in heaven and we will be together again, in that I rejoice.

The Smith Family,
The older you get the more times you hear about the loss of another friend or family member. Hilda and I have not fully come to terms with the loss of your mom, mother in law and grandmother. Now less than a month later we find ourselves saying goodbye to your dad, father in law and grandpa.
It was a little more than 25 years ago when we met Al and Peg as we walked down the side of their mobile on CC St as we headed out the gate to the mall. Al just coming out of the mobile saw us and Al being Al, Hello, How are you? Obviously a conversation ensued. He learned we lived on DD St from Ontario Canada and I was a Lion. Found out Al was a Lion and a Past District Governor. I was a PDG. He was an American Legion member and I a Canadian Legion member. By that time Peg and Hilda met and a strong bond of friendship was cemented there and then and has continued though many miles apart. We had the honour and privilege to visit a few days and met quite a few of the family who they both loved dearly. They came to visit us in Canada and meet our family. Friends like your mom and dad don’t come along that often and we have cherished them. We have so many memories we can look back on but will miss the phone calls, the sincere God Bless You and make sure you give that sweetheart of yours a big hug. To all of you Hilda and I send our deepest and sincere sympathy. Borrowing your dad’s farewell, May God Bless All of You.
Larry and Hilda Wainwright and Otis
Your Canadian friends

Dear Smith Family,
So sorry to hear of the passing of your father, so soon after the loss of your Mom. He was such a nice man, great familyman, great businessman and really had a great smile and whenever Mom and I went into the store to pick up her favorite ice cream he had a smile on his face for her and everyone!
