NORWOOD – Funeral services for 87 year old Barbara J. Newton, formerly of Knapp's Station and Chateaugay, will be held Saturday, April 13, 2019 at 11 a.m. at the Knapp's Station Church with Rev. Lee Sweeney presiding. Family and friends may call at the Knapp's Station Church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Burial will be held in the springtime at a later date at the Burke Center Cemetery, Burke, NY Barbara passed away on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at the Maplewood Campus in Canton.
Barbara is survived by her three daughters, Leila and Charles Crabb, Lisbon; Phyllis and Dick McDougall, Madrid; Mary and L. Michael LaComb, Ogdensburg; her son, James and Jan Newton, Auburn, Alabama; her five beloved grandchildren, Joseph and Amanda LaComb, Elizabeth LaComb, Patrick LaComb, Megan and Connor Pelkey, and Jacquel Newton; her two brothers, James Wake, Lafayette and John and Toni Wake, Syracuse along with several nieces and nephews. She is pre-deceased by her husband of 52 years, Lyle F. Newton, her brother, Lawrence Wake, and her sister, Helen Mills.
Born in Potsdam, NY on January 29, 1932 to the late John J. and Bernice C. Derouchie Wake, Barbara married Lyle F. Newton on April 12, 1952. She worked as an LPN at Canton-Potsdam Hospital for 13 years and was a homemaker. Barbara was a 4-H Leader for many years in Knapp Station and in Chateaugay and she enjoyed reading, knitting, sewing, gardening, baking, and was an "experimental" cook. She especially loved her kids and her grandkids Memorial donations in Barbara's memory can be made to the Knapp's Station Church and to Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley.
