NORFOLK-Leon L. Robert, age 88, a resident of St. Joseph’s Home in Ogdensburg and formerly of Norfolk, passed away early Tuesday morning at St. Joseph’s Home where he had been a resident for just over a year. Born in Norfolk, NY on December 3, 1928 to the late Marshall S. Robert and Velma M. Cheney, he graduated from Norfolk High School on June 9, 1946, where he lettered in Baseball, Soccer and Basketball. While growing up, Leon worked for Oliver Crabbe delivering feed and coal. In 1950, Leon started working as a NY State Trooper for Troop B in Malone and then was drafted in the U.S. Army where he served with the 11th Airborne Division until his honorable discharge in 1952. Upon his return from the service, he continued to work as a Trooper until he started to sell insurance and later worked as a Security Guard at the General Motors plant in Massena, retiring in 1983 after 25 years of service. Leon was a lifelong avid outdoorsman. He spent many hours fishing along the banks of the Racquette River and in Quebec on spring Trout fishing trips. Leon hunted for deer at Joe Indian Pond, outside of Parishville. Leon was a devoted Catholic as he was a communicant of the Church of the Visitation, a member of the K of C, a past member of the Norfolk Lions Club, Rod & Gun Club, the Norfolk Fire Department and the Joe Indian Association.
Leon is survived by his wife of 64 years, Rita, St. Joseph’s Home, Ogdensburg; a son, Leon and Amy Robert Jr., West Point, NY; his four daughters, Susan and Howard Hawkins, Sun City Center, FL; Janet Robert, Webster, NY; Donna and Terry Francis, Lisbon, NY; Carol Robert and David Horne, Kemptville, Ontario, CA; his three grandchildren; Christopher Francis, Marshall Robert, and John Robert; a brother Paul and Julie Robert, West Virginia, as well as several nieces and nephews. Leon was pre-deceased by his brother, Marshall Robert Jr.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Leon will be held Friday, January 6, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Visitation in Norfolk with Rev. Msgr. John Murphy presiding. Burial will be held in the spring at the Visitation Cemetery, Norfolk. Family and friends may call at the Buck Funeral Home in Norwood on Thursday, January 5, 2017 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Donations may be made to the American Red Cross in Leon’s memory.
