Obituary of Glady J. Blair

NORWOOD— Gladys Jane Blair, 86, also known as Nanna, Grandma and Mimi, passed away peacefully at the Evergreen Valley Nursing Home on Monday, December 21, 2015 surrounded by her family. Born in Bangor, NY on July 23, 1929 the daughter of the late Napolean and Elizabeth LaPage Martin, she married Francis D. Blair on June 30, 1947. They had five children together. Francis passed away in an accident at the ALCOA plant in 1976. Gladys remarried on October 29, 1983 to James T. Blair and gained four step-children. He passed away on December 21, 2000. Gladys is survived by four of her five children, Carl and Angie Blair, Norwood; George and Sally Blair, Norfolk; MaryJane and John Baughn, Peru, NY and Martin and Mary Blair, Norfolk. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren CariJane Lucas, Martin N. Jabaut Jr., Norman F. Jabaut II, Elizabeth F. Jabaut, Mechelle Bair, Jody Blair, Craig Blair, Francis Blair, TomiJo Blair, Martin Blair II, Jessica Blair, Theresa Bennett, Celena Gilman and her great-grandchildren Corbin and Lexi Lucas, Parker, Ryan, Kaitlyn, Jaxson and Weston Blair and Colten Regan. Gladys is also survived by her four stepchildren and their families, Patty Woods, FL; Cindy Barnes, Massena; James Blair, Potsdam and Nancy Matthews, Potsdam. Gladys is survived by a sister, Hazel Felix, Norfolk, as well as several nieces and nephews. Gladys was pre-deceased by a son, Francis J. Blair in 2014 and her six brothers, Harold, Napolean Jr., David, George, Melvin and Paul Martin and her four sisters, Ellen Simmons, Mable Brothers, Mary Martin and Doris Snickles. Gladys was originally from Norwood and West Stockholm, but recently moved to Peru, NY area to live with her daughter. She was a homemaker and enjoyed canning, cooking and baking, especially apple pies. She made numerous birthday and wedding cakes for family members and enjoyed every celebration that the family had. Gladys was a member of the Norfolk and Norwood American Legion Auxiliary’s in which she enjoyed marching in parades, she was a member of the Democratic Club, a charter member of the Birthday Club and the Golden Agers. She was always donating to St. Judes, the Paralyzed Veterans and many other organizations. She loved taking care of everyone, including stray animals. Her favorite pets were her dogs Rusty and Sue Lee and her cats Freddie and Mittens. She enjoyed shopping Avon and gave many gifts to her family. She was an avid shuffle board player, Bingo and Kismet player. She loved her tremendous social life, which included dancing, well into her later years and her late night diner trips for coffee and pie. Funeral services for Gladys will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Knapps Station Community Church with Rev. Lee Sweeney presiding. Burial will follow the services at Hale Cemetery, Norfolk.
