Obituary of Ann M. Hartin

NEW HARTFORD, NY-- Ann M. Hartin, 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 14th, 2013 at the Siegenthaler Center: Hospice and Palliative Care in New Hartford, NY surrounded by her loving family. She will be greatly missed by her children, their spouses, her grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. Ann was born at home on September 29, 1921 in Lochiel, Ontario, Canada to Gordon and Mary MacGillis. As a teenager and young woman she played the organ for St. Alexander’s Church. She graduated from the Grace Hospital Nursing School in Ottawa, Ontario as a Licensed OB/GYN nurse and worked as a nurse in Canada for several years until she married Stuart Hartin on May 15, 1954 and moved to Norwood, NY where she stayed at home and raised their four children. Ann is survived by her four children, Lorraine Hartin-Gelardi and her husband David, Salt Point, NY; John Douglas Hartin and his wife Beth, Woodstock, CN; Mrs. Margaret “Maggie” Reilly and her husband John, Utica; Bryan Hartin and his wife Megan, Oak Hill, VA; as well as 10 grandchildren, Meghan Gelardi Holmes and her husband Doug, Kevin Gelardi, Brendan Gelardi, Dan Hartin, Mike Hartin, Shannon Reilly Poole and her husband Tom, Patrick Reilly, Ian Hartin, Gavin Hartin and Laney Hartin and one great-grandchild, Earl David Holmes. She was pre-deceased by her husband Stuart in 1989 and two brothers, Joseph and Gerald McGillis. While she lived at her home in Norwood, Ann was an active member of St. Andrew’s Parish in Norwood and later Church of the Visitation Parish in Norfolk. She taught CCD, was president of the Altar and Rosary Society in both parishes, faithfully attended Mass every Sunday and enjoyed gathering with friends to participate in spiritual discussion groups. Prayer and a devotion to the rosary were a significant part of her daily spiritual life. Ann will be remembered for many things; her love of driving, working in her flower garden, baking the best chocolate chip cookies in the world, dutifully writing thank you notes and being a devoted grandmother. The family wishes to thank the staff of The Siegenthaler Center for their kind and caring support for Ann and her family during the last months of Ann’s life as well as her physician Dr. Katherine Stornelli. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 11 AM-2:00 PM at Buck Funeral Home in Norfolk followed by a funeral Mass at Church of the Visitation in Norfolk.
