CANTON-- Joseph A. Hebert passed away on Sunday morning, July 8, 2012, at his home on 37 Riverside Drive, Canton, NY under the care of his loving family, friends of Canton Enriched Housing and Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley.
Joseph A. Hebert was born in Lawrence, MA, to the late William and Bertha (Demers) Hebert. After the death of his mother, when he was 9 months old his sister, brother and he lived in an orphanage in Canada, until their father remarried. Not too long after the marriage, their stepmother died and they went to live with different relatives. Joes uncle and wife took him to live on their farm in Vermont. When he was 16 years old, he went out west to work for the Civilian Conservation Corps.
Joseph enlisted in the U.S. Army in1941 and served until 1945 in the African and European Theater and later served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1953.
After his tour of duties, he worked throughout the west before coming back east, and worked at many different construction jobs including the building of Interstate 81. Joseph was married to Annie Agnes Hatch and they lived in the area of Parish Pulaski, NY from the 1960s to the 1980s. In 1983, Joe retired as an Oswego County Heavy Duty Equipment Operator, and shortly thereafter, they began their winter moves to Florida. In 1988, they bought a home in Fort McCoy, Fl. where Annie passed away in 1990. Joseph was an avid hunter and fisherman who liked to camp, hunt and fish at Inlet and Redfield, NY.
Joseph later met Louise Andrews, his companion for several years and he moved to Keystone Heights, Fl. where she passed away after a car accident in 2009. In Oct. 2010, he moved home to New York and became a resident of the Canton Housing Authority/Enriched Housing on 37 Riverside Drive, Canton, NY.
Surviving are his step-children Sharon and husband Eugene J. Bonno, Colton, NY; Linda and husband Chuck Oaster, Canastota, NY; Marie and husband Bill Parker, Liverpool, NY; Dennis and wife Kathy Hatch, Ocala, FL and Roy and wife Becky Hatch, Ocala, FL. He has eighteen step-grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews
including Elaine Pressley of Wingate, NC and a half-sister Yvonne Carey
He was predeceased by his sister Marie Anita Bethel, Wingate, NC and a brother Thomas Hebert, FL
There will be a Memorial Service Friday, July 27, 2012, 3:00-5:00 PM at the Canton Housing Authority, 37 Riverside Drive, Canton, NY
