Please share a memory of Charles to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Charles Alfred Powell, age 70, passed peacefully from this life on October 10, 2011 at Fletcher-Allen Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont after a two-year battle with colon cancer. Charles was born on August 8, 1941, the second son of Stewart and Ruth Powell of Norwood, New York. Charles graduated from Norwood-Norfolk Central School and went on to Canton ATC. In 1967, Charlie joined the Army and served as a Warrant Officer and helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War; he left the military in 1969. After his military service, Charlie gained employment with General Electric and Lockheed Martin as a radar site specialist for over twenty-five years. Although his career began and ended in Syracuse, New York, Charlies work brought him to many remote locations such as the Aleutian Islands, Thailand, The Philippines and Turkey. It is in Thailand that Charlie met Supranom and they married. Later, he and Supranom had two daughters, Michelle and Paula, in Potsdam, New York. Charlie retired in 1997 and returned to Potsdam. In his retirement, Charlie loved nothing more than his grandsons and fishing. He visited with his grandchildren often and most other weekends, Charlie could be found at Star Lake with his fishing buddy, Gary Mott of Gouverneur. Charlies other passion included cars which he shared with his brother, Eddie. He also had a green thumb and was fond of gardening. As an avid reader and puzzle lover, a morning did not go by that Charlie had either a crossword in front of him or a book in his hands.
Charles is survived by his daughter, Michelle Schloss (Derek) and two grandsons Nolan 15, and Luca 14 months, of Tucson, Arizona; his daughter Paula of Jacksonville, Florida; his brother Edward Powell (Susan) and nieces Sarah and Laura of West Potsdam, New York. Charles is predeceased by his father Stewart, his mother Ruth, and brother, Wayne Powell.
