NORFOLKFuneral services for 94 year old Eleanor B. Hayes of the St. Regis Nursing Home and formerly of 4 Rogers Drive, Norfolk, will be held Thursday at 11 am at the Church of the Visitation in Norfolk with Rev. Andrew Amyot presiding. A spring burial will be held in Visitation Cemetery, Norfolk. Friends and family may call at the Buck Funeral Home in Norfolk on Wednesday from 3-7 pm. Mrs. Hayes passed away Sunday evening at the St. Regis Nursing Home in Massena.
Mrs. Hayes is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Natalie Todd, Norfolk; her son, Kurt and Debbie Hayes, Oswego; her six grandchildren, Brent Todd, Christopher Todd, William Todd, Nicole Hayes, Stephanie Hayes and Melissa Hayes and her five great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, George and Leona Benton, Potsdam and Mrs. Olga Thomas, Potsdam; her sister-in-law, Sally Hayes, Norfolk and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hayes was pre-deceased by her in-laws, Mark and Helen, Richard and Marion and John Hayes. The family would like to say a special Thank-You to her caregivers, Joan Austin and Linda Foster, the caregivers at the St. Regis Nursing Home and Inez Shortte, for being there and helping out with everything.
Born in Potsdam on September 2, 1916 to the late Gerald and Blanche Grant Benton, she married Francis Shoney Hayes on October 8, 1943. He passed away on October 23, 1990. She received her masters degree and taught school, starting at a one room schoolhouse in Picketville. She also taught fourth and sixth grade at the Norfolk Grade School and seventh and eighth grade reading at Norwood-Norfolk Central School. She taught a total of 40 years. Eleanor was very active in the 4-H club in her earlier years. She was a charter member of the Fort Nightly Club in Norfolk and a member of the NYS Retired Teachers Assoc., the St. Lawrence County Retired Teachers Assoc. and the Altar and Rosary Society in Norfolk. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, traveling, playing bridge and walking, and was active in the community.
