ORWOOD -Calling hours and funeral services for 90 year old Virgil E. Trombly; a longtime resident of Norwood and of Maryville,Tennessee; will be held in the Spring.Mr. Trombly died November 27,2009 at his home in Tennessee surounded by his family.Arrangements are with the Buck Funeral Home in Norwood.
Surviving are his wife Sonia of Norwood and Maryville; two daughters; Mrs. David Kathy Buerger of Watertown and Mrs. Donald Gale Grems of Greenback, Tennessee. He is also survivied by a step-son Scott and Diana Plummer of Lenoir City, Tennessee; 6 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren;one brother Lyle Trombly of West Chazy;three sisters; Beulah LaVarnway of Morrisonville,NY;Alma Girioux of Ingraham,NY; and Rita Fessette of Point Au Roche, NY; and several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by brothers Roy,Merton, and Hersey Trombly and by sisterss Doris Bechard and Norma Oliver.
Born in Ingraham,New York on October 3, 1919; son of Wilbur and Aurelia Pombrio Trombly, he first married Helen Neverett on August 4, 1945. She died on January 4, 1959. He then married Sonia Strater Plummer on January 6, 1968.He was employed as a sales representative for V.S. Jerry & Sons in Massena, New York retiring in 1980.
In 1942 he entered the Army-Air Force and enlisted into the Aviation Cadets and during WW II , he flew 36 missions as pilot of a B24 Bomber in the 8th.Air Force 445th. Bomb Group.At one point, his airplane was crippled and he bailed his entire crew out safely.He was discharged as a 1st. Lieutenant in 1945.
He was a communicant of St. Andrews Church, a lifetime member of the Potsdam Elks Club, a member of the Norwood American Legion, Vice-President of the Best Sportsman Club, a member of the Board of Directors of Farmers National Bank in Winthrop, past Norwood Village Trustee from 1973-1983, and was a Key Bank Advisory Board member in Massena for 15 years. He was also the youngest Supervisor elected in the Town of Chazy and served from 1948-1953.
